How to Negotiate Freelance Writing Rates
Calculating estimated costs is only the first step. When pitching editors:
- Outline Reporting Efforts: If a story requires travel, phone interviews, or public records requests, explain this to justify higher rates.
- Request a Kill Fee: Ensure your contract includes a "kill fee" (typically 20-25% of the total fee) paid if the publication decides not to run the article through no fault of your own.
- Clarify Expenses: Establish beforehand whether travel, telephone, and research expenses are reimbursed separately.
